Beach Education @ Kaka Point

On Monday we went to Kaka Point for Beach Education. We learnt how to swim in the sea safely and how to recognise a rip. We played some games in the sand, made sand sculptures and had swim in the sea with the adults.
We learnt how to be sun smart with the tongue twister - see if you can beat Mrs Hyslop at it - it takes her only 5 secs.
Sun smart Sam says, slip, slop, slap, wrap, slurp, slide in the summertime.

We did a role play on how to recognise rips and what to do if you get caught in one.

We learnt the ten rules on how to stay safe at the beach, they are:

  • Never swim alone
  • Learn to recognise rip
  • Listen to the lifeguards
  • Respect other surf users
  • Use the right equipment
  • Know your limits
  • Be prepared
  • Swim between the flags
  • Never swim without an adult
  • Be sunsmart

It was an awesome day at the beach, we learnt heaps and can't wait to go next time!

Athletics with Mitch & Rory

Yesterday Mitch and Rory (the new sports activator) came to our school to take an athletics session.
We practiced our sprinting techniques, things we had to remember where to look straight ahead, have relaxed arms but pump them hard and have cheetah feet. We had to lie on the grass with our chins on our hands, when Mitch clapped his hands we had to jump up as fast as we could and sprint to the finish line.

The next activity was high jump, we had to practice scissor kicks using our arms to help lift us off the ground.
Arms high to help us jump!

When throwing the discus we need to remember to hold it with only the tips of our fingers, it should glide flat through the air and the last finger it rolls off is your pointing finger.

The last activity we did was the time trial through the weaving poles, hurdles, fast feet and sprinting. Our best class time was 33 seconds.

It was helpful to practice our athletic skills for Small Schools Athletics in three weeks.
Running fast - only a few of us forgot to look where we are going!
