Learning about an EGGcellent business

11.6.15
Today we had Mrs Pringle come and talk about her company 'Agreeable Nature'. The Pringles have a farm and on their farm they have cows, sheep and hens. They sell their eggs to local supermarkets and to some restaurants in Dunedin. Her egg selling business started small then grew and grew as more and more people wanted to eat her delicious eggs.
They now have 5 custom built hen houses that house 500 hens each, the hens roam freely in their paddocks and the sometimes head into the cow paddocks to scratch around in their dung.
She told us all about the main things for setting up a business and how marketing (or selling your business) is very important. We will take her advice into consideration as we continue to investigate our businesses, thinking about a catchy name, colours of writing and any pictures we use.
It was very interesting listening to her and learning about her journey. We also got to place one of her stickers on an egg carton and fill our carton with her smaller eggs from her new hens.
Our class would like to plan a trip to visit and see her egg process in action.
Thanks heaps for coming to our school Mrs Pringle!

Cybersaftey with John Parsons

Yesterday we went to Rosebank School to listen to John Parsons talk about Cyber Safety, we thought he was really interesting to listen to and we all learnt new things and refreshed our memories of past lessons on Cyber Safety.

John Parsons used to be homeless, and left school because he was bullied, an 8 year old girl and her family helped him by feeding him, and her brother helped him and played with him at school so nobody bullied him, they had a huge impact on his life and how he has turned out.

He shared lots about this experiences in his life, and thinks that everybody should do a good deed everyday, and be very empathetic about others and help others in need.

He talked about valuing your identity, and never putting photos of yourself or personal details on the internet, he also talked about respecting others and always asking before you put photos of them on the internet.

He showed and explained to us why we should have our privacy settings right on Facebook and only follow people who are your friends, he also said that you need a game avatar and a game nickname so nobody knows who you are.

He showed us how easy it was to hack a computer by plugging in memory sticks, clicking on links you shouldn't etc, and how the viruses just sit, unseen in your computer for ages.

We watched a video at the end that explained the kindness trail/boomerang, it showed that if you help other people, they are more likely to help others as well.

Everybody had a good day, we learnt lots and he was funny to listen to.

Hockey with our Activator

Today Rory came to teach us hockey skills and drills.
First we did weaving through cones in three groups and we had races.

We played a game called hockey king, At the start it was really hard because there were so many people and a small place to play it. It was hard but fun.

After  that we practiced a skill where you have to balance the ball on the end of your stick.

We will keep practicing for the hockey tournament later in the term.
