Disco Time at Warepa School

 School Disco Fundraiser

On Friday the 22nd of August, Warepa School hosted their first ever disco in the local Warepa Hall.

The disco, purely for fun, raised a total of $241.52 profit to the organisers, the Senior Class Council. 

The hall was lit with flickering fairy lights and the floorboards creaked as the excited pupils danced danced into the night. 

“The disco was a fantastic night for all, including the parents” says the Senior Class Council president, Scott Chittock.

The students had put many hours into decorating the hall for the disco.

“Each group worked well and stuck to their allocated jobs most of the time,” says the president. The school saved even more money because of the generosity of the parents and New World. The whole school community enjoyed the great fundraiser.

This is a really cool teachers dressed up at the disco - they are copy cats and look great in our sports uniforms!

 This is a really cute pig that Mrs Wilson brought to school.  It was wearing a nappy so that it didn't make a mess on the floor.  It was a piglet that pig hunters had found with its brother in the Kai hills.  It's mother didn't want it and ran away now Mrs Wilson is its mum.
Brendan said, "when it grows up will it be bacon."
"No!!!" said Mrs Wilson.

Everyone loved seeing the pig. A wild pig has a long snout and legs, this piglet had these characteristics.  Hopefully one day we will get to see the pig again.

Cross Country 2014

Yesterday we had our very own Warepa School Cross Country, we had to run a number of 750 metre laps. We went down through the trees and wiggled round the Driver's driveway, then up past the Galt's house, over the road and through the school gate and over the line on the top court. 
The year seven and eights stood around the track and marshalled as well as cheering everybody on, then the year five and sixes were eager to repay the favour and cheered the year seven and eights on. 
Everybody had an awesome day and there was heaps of parent support, the Mum's even dressed in their finery for the event! 
We have lots of people going to SOPPSA tomorrow to represent Warepa and I am sure they will go very well.

We had to hold the cross country at our school because the Clinton grounds were wet and covered in mud and we could not get a day to suit all the small schools, it was a exciting experiance for all, there were lots of difering opinions about wheather it was better or worse - "I liked having the marshalls round the track to support you as you ran",  

The year one and twos ran 1 lap (750m), year three and fours ran two laps (1.5km), year five and sixes ran three laps (2.25km) and the year seven and eights ran three laps and one smaller training lap (2.5km).

Fire Wise Message

This term we have been learning how to prevent fires and what to do in a house fire or a building fire. We all know that fires are very dangerous things and if we get caught in one we have a high chance of injury or death.

Last week we had a visitor from a fire service officer to reinforce the message to have working smoke alarms in every room in your house, most fires start in the kitchen and NEVER, EVER leave you cooking unattended in the kitchen.

This week we had to make a fire poster using KidsPix.

Year 6 Technology

Technology day is every second Thursday for the Year 7 & 8 students in our class, they travel to Balclutha. While they are gone we (Year 6's) do various types of technology also, this term we are looking at Food Technology. 

Today we were split into two groups, one group made cheese scones and the second group made cheese muffins.

Isla, Jack, Blake, Danyon, Laytun, Callum and Macleod they made the scones.

Curtis, Tom, Antonio, Vaughan, Morgan and Lachlan made the muffins. 

We all had an awesome day, we had to work as a team and show cooperation to follow the recipe, combine the ingredients, clean up and enjoy the finished product together.

The final taste results for favourite tasting is: scones - 8 muffins - 5.

So I guess the scones tasted the best, but we did smother them with strawberry jam!

Next time we are going to make pizza, yummy!!

Reading

The class is silent, nothing can be heard but noses sniffing, pages turning, the odd cough or a child stirring in the bean bag rearranging them to delve more into their book.

The teachers are happy. The children are reading more.

Did you know that adding 10 minutes a day to a child's reading makes a big difference over the year?

Their reading becomes more fluent. It is actually a 200% increase in word exposure over one year!

Research shows us that the benefits of reading 10 minutes more a day include improved performance in General knowledge, vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency and spelling.

Rippa Tournament

This week we have been getting coached by Mitch because on Wednesday 30th July we are going into Dunedin to play in the Otago Rippa finals. Mitch has been teaching us how to be light on our feet, to use supporting talk, support each other, do quick off loads, how to spin and side step and how to rip properly.
This week we have also gone into Balclutha to play and practice with Rosebank school who are also going to the Otago Rippa finals. If we win the Otago Rippa finals we go up to the North Island to play there. The rest of the Senior Class are coming to support us and make some iMoves.  I am really excited and nervous about the Otago Rippa finals at the same time.

Maths

This week we have been learning a new maths programme, it's Self-Regulated Learning. We have a black book that the year 6's work out of. The year 7's and 8's work out of a green book. I like the new maths because we don't have to do the same learning as everyone else, we are at different levels and we practice activities that are based on what we need to learn. We are learning about weight, volume and capacity.

 Rippa

The Wapera Winners are back in action after coming second in the Rippa tournament and now the team is going to Forsyth Barr Stadium. The rest of the class are tagging along, they're making iMoves on the ipads. They are following us like bees and acting like the paparazzi. 
Besides getting photo bombs and interviews, the Winners have had skills sessions with Mitch and have also been to Rosebank School for a practice.
