Expanding in Science

Today we did some science experiments involving ice and heat. We were focussing on observing the reactions and making predictions about what was going to happen.

The ice is melting inside the cup of water, the level of water didn't increase as much as we predicted because when water freezes it expands.

We placed a balloon over the top of an empty bottle and then put the bottle into a bowl of hot water. We predicted that the balloon would rise because the air in the  bottle would hear up and expand which in turn will make the balloon rise and grow in size. We also predicted that the small bottle would have a bigger balloon as the area was smaller. The boiling water makes steam which acts like a hot air balloon and makes the ballon expand, both balloons rose to the same diameter and height.

Triangle Geometry

Last week with Mrs A we studied the geometry of triangles. We looked at Equilateral triangles, Scalene triangles and Isosceles triangles. There are also three main angles, Obtuse angles, Acute angles and Right angles.

All triangles are polygons with three sides, three interior  angles that all add up to 180 degrees.
Triangles come in different shapes and sizes and each type has a different name.

Equilateral Triangle
Equilateral triangles have three equal sides.
They have three equal angles, always 60 degrees.
They always have acute angles (less than 90 degrees).

Isosceles Triangle
Isosceles triangles have two equal sides.
They have two equal angles.
Their angles are usually acute.

Scalene Triangle
Scalene triangles have no equal sides.
They have no equal angles
Their angles are obtuse (more than 90 degrees)

Kids in the Kitchen

7/8/15
Today the year sixes used their cookbooks from Clued up Kids called 'Kids in the Kitchen' to try out a recipe called salmon and potato cakes.
First we peeled the potatoes and then we cut them up and put them in a pot to cook while Lucy opened the salmon can. Then we got to look up information about potatoes, we found a song about potatoes, here's the link https://youtu.be/q7uyKYeGPdE. Next we cut up some bacon and put in a pot with some onions while Leah chopped up parsley. We whisked up two eggs and put it in a bowl with corn, bacon, mashed potatoes, salt and pepper. We mixed that and rolled little balls into bread crumbs and cooked them in a little oil. We also made another batch where we added one egg, salt, pepper, salmon, mashed potatoes and parsley and then rolled balls of the mixture into bread crumbs and then cooked them they where DELICIOUS!!!

Harold

On Monday Harold the Life Education bus came to Warepa School to teach us about our body.
Some things that we learnt are that our brain has over 100 billon neurons and our brain weighs 1.5 kg. We also learnt about our organs, if you roll out your teachers lungs they will be as long as a tennis court! We also learnt that your stomach is as big as your fist, it can hold up to1.5 litres of food.
We were given some cards which had examples of stress on them, we came up with different ways such as breathing, trying to relax, eat, talk to someone.
Finally we did some karaoke with Harold, the girls sang louder than the boys and there are only 5 girls in our class!

The Stafix Comp

Last term Mrs Bissett entered a Stafix competition to try to win some money for a new school van that will benefit our school and the community.
There was prize money for first, second and third place.
The top prize money was five thousand dollars, the second prize was three thousand dollars and third was two thousand dollars.
We came third!!!!
On the 6th of August some Stafix men came to present the cheque of $2,000. He asked us some question about different things like fencing gear and Highlanders. If you got the answer right you would won a free highlanders hat.
We will spend the money wisely on our new school van!

Clued up Kids

On Wednesday morning the year 6's went to the Recreation Centre for a health and safety course called Clued Up Kids.
We learnt a lot of new things that we will use in the future. There were 10 stations which included fire safety, dog safety, earthquake safety, beach safety, quad bike safety, firearm safety, bike and helmet safety and relax Kids.
We rotated around all the activities during the morning.
The food was yummy sandwiches and fruit to take home.
We came home with pamphlets and a pack for the teacher to teach the class about safety.
It was a great opportunity to learn a variety of ways to keep ourselves safe.
Thank you to the organisers.

Book Celebration Week

This week we have been celebrating books in a variety of ways. We have read fairy tales and written letters about the characters in the fairy tales to the editor. We have also studied various authors such as Joy Cowley, Margaret Mahy and we have to find out information about a New Zealand author. Today we had a dress up day as a character from a book we know and love. There were 3 'Cat in the Hat's' lots of animals, a few witches, a Harry Potter and a bunch of other imaginative characters!
