Problem Solving in Maths

Yesterday for Maths we worked in our 'Buzz Groups' to solve a problem Mrs A gave us.

The problem was that a girl wanted to buy a surf board for $850. She got $5.50 to travel on the bus everyday and $4.50 to buy a hot chocolate if she walked. She had to travel at least two days on the bus.

We had to come up with a savings plan in our groups. Some ideas were - On the days she didn't have to travel to school on the bus she could save this money, if she wanted to walk to school she needed to buy an umbrella if it rained and a hot chocolate (but she could take the hot chocolate from home).

We set off into our groups to solve the problem by figuring out the most efficient way was to save $850 for the surf board.

Our group brought her an umbrella and then we went to The Warehouse and brought her a big tin of milo for $1, she used a thermos she found in the basement to keep her hot chocolate warm.

We managed to help her save the money for the surfboard in 80 weeks, and she had $70 left over which she used to buy sunscreen for at the beach.

Borland Lodge Fun Time Senior Class Camp

Our blog has been a bit quiet lately as we have been on School Camp, but this is a recount of some of our adventures last week.

We started off with a two hour long drive and headed off first to Clifden Caves.  We were caving for two hours, it was a fun experience.  We saw some glow worms and their webs and stalactites and stalagmites.  It was cool.  We then headed off to Borland Lodge where we were staying for the week.

Here we did fun activities like archery, air rifle shooting, rock climbing, abseiling, bivvy building, kayaking and horizontal bungy, and a nature walk.
Tom’s favourite part of camp was the horizontal bungy because he slid all the way back in the mud after firstly being tricked that he was hooked up when he wasn’t. Macleod’s favourite activity was abseiling because it was fun and it made him have an adrenaline rush and he has never abseiled before, the worst part was that we only got to do it once and he got lost coming back up.

Developing the Remembrance Field at Warepa School for the Fallen Soldiers of Warepa

Yesterday with our buddies we made the Remembrance Crosses. They have the names of the fallen soldiers in the Warepa Community. The crosses are all named and we invite all the community to visit the school to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers.

Today for maths we made a grid and worked out some problems to see how big our remembrance field would be. Then we went outside and measured out the grid ready for the students to place their crosses.

The Senior Class measured the grid for the crosses, there are 5 rows of 6 crosses, each cross is 65 centimetres apart.

We held a remembrance ceremony to place the crosses and each of the buddies placed the crosses to honour the soldiers. Some of crosses are a nurse, heroes and the unknown soldier.

All our students were involved making the remembrance crosses with their school buddies.

As the crosses were put in the ground each buddy said, " We remember........"

TIGER TURF ON THE TENNIS COURT

Tiger Turfing our Tennis Court
Last year the school decided to put down some Tigerturf in our tennis court.
It has taken a long time to get it started. Five days ago they finally started.
We asked if we were could have an interview with them and they kindly let us.
This is what we already knew before the interview
  • They dug holes for the new poles, concreted them
  • They marked out some guide lines
  • They sprayed the cracks with weed killer
  • They laid out the turf - main colours …...

The Warepa Senior Class developed some questions and interview the site foreman Bart from Fulton and Hogan Queenstown Division.
How did they install it?
1.They swept the concrete to get all of the rubbish off it so then it is smooth.
2. Measured to get the turf in the right place
3.Rolled and stuck the turf down with special green glue
4.They cut out pieces of the turf and put new colors in new colors in to make new lines.
5. Now they are just about to start putting down the sand and sweep it into the turf.
How does the turf stay in place?
The glue only holds the joints together and the ten tonne of sand holds it in place
What colors are the lines
Red               Basketball
White Tennis
Yellow Netball

Tiger Turf
The past week we have had Bart and his team here in Warepa.
He has been putting up the tiger turf, For the start Bart and his team has brushed the tennis court so there is no stones on the concret. Bart is a man who works for fulton hogan, he lays out tigerturf for schools and clubs. He likes to tell people about the turf.
Then they have rolled out six rolls of green tiger turf with white tennis lines.
Then Bart drew some lines on the tiger turf so he knew where to put the other lines for different sports and they are, red is for basketball, yellow is for netball and white is for tennis.
After they have done that the special sand will come in.
There will be ten tonne on top of the tiger turf.
Antonios favourite is that you can play lots of sports on it.
Vaughans favourite is that we can see them doing the work on it, the process has been really fun and interesting to watch.

Have you seen our tigerturf lately if you haven't well you should. The process was long and cool watching it was awesome they used all types of cool tools to lay it down. They had to dig holes for the turning poles, we can play netball and basketball with the turning poles.
Then they marked out some guidelines to measure the court correctly to lay the turf down.
The next step they had to spray the cracks with weed killer to stop all the dirt and grass so it doesn't grow thru the turf. They laid out the main colors for the turf which was green and blue.
The tools that they used were double cutter, side cutter, drill, craft knife, measuring tape, sand rake, wheelbarrow and a power broom.
Are favourite part was seeing how the tools work.

The Tiger Turf Process

step 1. There s a man who uses a computer to make all of the measurements so Burt knows where to plays the turf.

step 2. Bart will clean out the cracks get the weeds out so they don’t grow through the turf then makes the holes for the netball and basketball hoop.

step 3. Then Bart will write out all of the measurements on the concrete.

step 4. Bart will then start to place the turf then he will cut the turf and stick it down, he will also place the lines for the sports.

step 5. Bart will then order 10 tonnes of sand to get dumped on the turf.

step 6. Then Bart and his mates will spread the sand out with there special tools, he will then attach a special broom to a quad bike and tow it around the court to flatten the sand and even it out.

TIGER TURF

The last few days we have had three people come and put down some tiger-turf.
The first thing they did was spread the weeds, then they laid down the tiger-turf, cut it, then glued the tiger-turf down.
Then they cut the half circles in all different colours.
Our favourite thing was when Bart told us about the tiger-turf and all the tools like the double cutter and the slicer.
The most interesting thing that I liked was how much sand they need to put 10 tonne of sand goes on the tigerturf and it soaks in by the rain
The tools that they used were an cutter, broom, tape measure , spreader and hammer.
The sand was mixed in to the tiger turf so its safer but we can still get hurt on it though like grazing our knees and hurt our eyes by getting sand in them or slipping on it when it’s wet.

Did you know there is a tiger at our school? It’s names ‘Tiger Turf’

An order of the court construction

1. They dug some holes for the tennis net  and basketball/netball
2. Then they sprayed some lines to find the centre to muser off
3. Next they lay out some of the turf
4. They stuck the turf down with glue
5. Then they drew lines were the lines are going to go
6. Then they cut it out and put the colours that the sport was in
7. Today there is 10 tonne of sand coming on one truck to go on top
8. Tomorrow afternoon it might be ready

TIGER AT SCHOOL

What is tiger turf? No, it’s not a tiger on our turf, it’s like colourful carpet for our tennis court. We both think its brightened up our school. It looks much better than the cracked grey concrete we used to have. We think it will be really cool watching them dump a whole ten tonnes of sand! We even get free cut offs of the turf. We all think it feel great instead of hard old concrete.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT WAREPA SCHOOL...

On the 2nd of March we came to school and we found a few men working on our tennis court. These men were here to lay out our new tiger turf. It has been fun to watch the process of the tiger going down. Yestarday we interviewed Bart the main worker. We had a lot of questions and they all got answered. At lunch time all the kids went to Bart and  got pieces of turf. Today the sand that will hold down the turf is coming in a truck to finish off the product and we will hopefully be playing on it by tomorrow.

Tigerturf Upgrade at Warepa School

The last few weeks at our school, we have been upgrading the tennis court using tigerturf, we have had the installers come and they have been working busily since last week, trying to get our turf ready to play on.

First they measured our court and put lines down for the playing fields, they then dug/drilled the holes for our new basketball/netball hoops and sprayed the courts with weed killer, they then concreted the poles for the hoops in. They lay the big pre lined pieces of turf down on the courts and then started to cut holes to insert more lines where needed. They then began to lift up the edges of the turf and stuck thick tape underneath, they put a special glue onto the tape and stuck the joins down. Once they are finished sticking the joins and edges down, they need to spread ten tonne of sand across the tennis court, the men then need to sweep across it with a heavy duty broom dragged behind a quad bike (usually it is a ute but our court is too small). To get the sand and turf properly compacted, we will need a couple of heavy rainfalls and lots of footsteps on the court.

The court colours we are getting are yellow - netball, red - basketball, white - tennis, the lines can also be mixed up to use for hockey and other sports. The only thing that will probably grow on the court is moss and that can be killed by tipping washing powder on it. Some things you are not allowed to do is waterblast, have hot things on it barbeques etc, chemicals and other alike substances.

Below are some pictures from Wednesday of the turf.

Beach Education @ Kaka Point

On Monday we went to Kaka Point for Beach Education. We learnt how to swim in the sea safely and how to recognise a rip. We played some games in the sand, made sand sculptures and had swim in the sea with the adults.
We learnt how to be sun smart with the tongue twister - see if you can beat Mrs Hyslop at it - it takes her only 5 secs.
Sun smart Sam says, slip, slop, slap, wrap, slurp, slide in the summertime.

We did a role play on how to recognise rips and what to do if you get caught in one.

We learnt the ten rules on how to stay safe at the beach, they are:

  • Never swim alone
  • Learn to recognise rip
  • Listen to the lifeguards
  • Respect other surf users
  • Use the right equipment
  • Know your limits
  • Be prepared
  • Swim between the flags
  • Never swim without an adult
  • Be sunsmart

It was an awesome day at the beach, we learnt heaps and can't wait to go next time!

Athletics with Mitch & Rory

Yesterday Mitch and Rory (the new sports activator) came to our school to take an athletics session.
We practiced our sprinting techniques, things we had to remember where to look straight ahead, have relaxed arms but pump them hard and have cheetah feet. We had to lie on the grass with our chins on our hands, when Mitch clapped his hands we had to jump up as fast as we could and sprint to the finish line.

The next activity was high jump, we had to practice scissor kicks using our arms to help lift us off the ground.
Arms high to help us jump!

When throwing the discus we need to remember to hold it with only the tips of our fingers, it should glide flat through the air and the last finger it rolls off is your pointing finger.

The last activity we did was the time trial through the weaving poles, hurdles, fast feet and sprinting. Our best class time was 33 seconds.

It was helpful to practice our athletic skills for Small Schools Athletics in three weeks.
Running fast - only a few of us forgot to look where we are going!
